Using a rigid aluminum structure and a Ford-sourced engine, the MXT looks good and should feature excellent handling.

The MXT should go a long way toward changing perceptions in the U.S. about Mexican craftsmanship. This little sports car, the brainchild of Daniel Mastretta, uses a rigid, lightweight chassis made from aluminum and a short wheelbase, which should give it excellent handling.

Mastretta, whose eponymously named company began production of the MXT this year, previously built kit cars. The MXT is the company's first full production car.

The engine, a 2-liter Duratec, is sourced from Ford. For the MXT, Mastretta fits it with a turbocharger and new engine programming. The engine makes 250 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, getting the car to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Mastretta showed the MXT off here at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. Prospective buyers can reserve a $60,000 MXT on the company Web site. But with only 150 cars made annually, and sales in both North America and Europe, supplies will be limited.
