Parapan American Games: Highlights from Day 6
Football 5-a-Side
In the preliminary round matches Friday at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, Brazil beat Colombia, 2-0, and Uruguay beat El Salvador by the same score.

Host nation Mexico tied with Argentina, 1-1, despite the fact that Argentina had 24 shots on goal compared to Mexico’s 13. Felipe Gustavo Arana had the lone goal on the day for the home team.

The final day of preliminary round matches takes place Saturday, as Mexico will face Uruguay, Brazil will challenge Argentina and Colombia will play El Salvador.

Goalball
In semi-final action, Brazil and the USA won in both the men’s and women’s competition. On the men’s side, Brazil hammered Mexico, 10-0, and the USA beat rival Canada, 11-4. For the women, Brazil beat Canada, 7-4, and the USA defeated Mexico, 10-2.

The medal-round matches will take place Saturday in the final day of Goalball competition.

Judo
The Judo competition finally kicked off Friday, as the USA’s Myles Porter – who was named the delegation’s flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony – went undefeated in the men’s -100kg division.

Canada’s Tony Walby claimed gold in the men’s +100kg and Cuba’s Jorge Hierrezuelo won the men’s -90kg competition.

Sitting Volleyball
Brazil defeated the USA in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15) in the gold-medal match to claim to sole London 2012 Paralympic Games spot up for grabs. It was the same outcome from the 2007 Parapans back in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Canada beat Colombia in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-16) in the bronze-medal game.

Para-Table Tennis
In the final day of Para-Table Tennis, Brazil beat Argentina in the men’s team C4-5 final and Canada beat Brazil in the men’s team C6-8 final.

Brazil won the men’s team C9-10 final with a five-game victory over the USA and Mexico stole the title from the USA in the women’s team C1-3 competition.

Wheelchair Basketball
In a shocking outcome, Colombia beat favoured Canada in the men’s Wheelchair Basketball semi-finals in overtime, 69-58. The teams exchanged the lead half a dozen times in the fourth quarter but found themselves tied at the end of regulation. In overtime, a Colombian 12-1 run capped off by a Rodney Hawkins did Canada in.

With the win, Colombia qualified for London 2012, but Canada must win bronze now Saturday if it wants to qualify.

In the other men’s semi-final, the USA beat Mexico, 76-48, qualifying for London 2012 and earning the right to face Colombia in the finals.

The women’s gold-medal game between Canada and the USA will also take place Saturday, while Mexico and Brazil will fight for bronze.

Wheelchair Tennis
Gustavo Fernandez claimed the coveted men’s singles gold after dominating teammate Agustin Ledesma in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). The USA’s Stephen Welch took bronze.

In the women’s doubles final the USA’s tandem of Emmy Kaiser and Mary Soldan beat Colombians Johana Martinez and Angelica Bernal and (6-3, 6-0) for gold. Chile’s francisca Mardones and Maria Antoneita Ortiz won bronze.
